Getting Set Up for WebCT
Prior to registering on distance learning courses, please go to http://webct.ex.ac.uk using the computer you intend to use to access your course (whether this is at home, on a laptop, at work, in a library etc...), and to click on 'Check Web Browser'. This will show you if there are any obvious issues with the computer, or the way it is set up, which may prevent access to the course online as well as advice on what to do to resolve these issues.
Known Issues: Java
The latest Java Runtime Environment that has been released (Version 6 Update 1 or newer) is not compatible with the version of WebCT currently being used within the University and will cause the browser check window to regularly pop-up whilst using WebCT. Please do not install it at the present time. If you have already installed the latest version please remove it and your computer should revert back to the previously installed version of Java - in Windows this can be done via the 'Control Panel' using the 'Add or Remove Programs' tool.
To find out which version of Java you have, go to http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp and click on 'verify installation'. Please note that if you are prompted to update your version of Java you should not do so, for the reasons given above.
Problems Logging in to WebCT?
Existing Students (Not Film MA)
Once you have received your welcome letter for this academic year you should be able to log into your course using your existing username and password.
New Students and Film MA Students
You will need to register online (you will receive instructions on how to do this). Once you have registered and received your username and password it will take 24-48 hours (not including weekends) for the system to load you into your course - after this you should be able to log in to WebCT.
All Students
- If, when logging in, all you see is a blank screen, you will have entered an incorrect username and/or password. Click the back arrow on your browser to return to the login screen and try again.
- If none of these scenarios apply to you and you have gone through the instructions in 'Getting Set Up for WebCT' but you are still having difficulty logging in, please contact us.
