Submitting Assessed Essays / Assignments
If you are a distance learning student submitting an assessed essay or assignment, please follow the instructions below, which differ from previous years (there are separate instructions for submitting practice (i.e. non-assessed) essays and assignments).
1. STUDENT ASSESSMENT FORM (AVAILABLE ONLINE)
All assessed essays/assignments must be accompanied by a Student Assessment Form. In a change from previous years, you will need to print or download your form(s) from the website at:
You will need to log on with your University 'username' and 'password'.
Forms will be specific to you and to the assessment you are submitting: Please select the module and assessment you intend submitting. Clicking on the button will generate a 'pdf' of your submission cover sheet. If you are emailing in your assessment - please save the page to your computer and attach it to an email with your essay. If you are posting in your assessment please print off the page and include it with your work.
Please note: Your assessment/essay must include the following on every page, either as a header or footer:
- Your name and student number
- The module code and title
Please also ensure that each page of your assessment/essay is numbered.
The Word Count should appear on the first page only.
Please note that your work cannot be forwarded for marking until we have received the Student Assessment Form ("Form A") to accompany it.
If you receive your course units via the internet but encounter difficulty downloading your Student Assessment Form from the above website, please contact us for further assistance.
2. HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR ASSESSMENT
You may submit your assessment by e-mail, post or by hand. In each case, you should submit one copy of your work and one Student Assessment Form (also known as a “Form A” or essay cover sheet).
(a) E-mail
You can send us your work and your completed Student Assessment Form as attachments by email to:
We will acknowledge receipt of emailed assessments within one working day. Please do not send assessed work to your tutor’s email address.
Please send your attachment as a 'Microsoft Word' document or an rtf (Rich Text Format) file, so that we can maintain the same formatting when we pass it to your tutor. If you have included pictures or diagrams in your work, please ensure that the file size of the attachment does not exceed 4 Megabytes. If you require help with reducing the file size of work that includes pictures or diagrams, please contact the Distance Learning Team.
The subject of your email should indicate that you are sending an assignment and it should include your surname and module (i.e. R.Smith BritishHistory1750 Essay1). Where possible, you should give your attachment the same name.
Do not forget also to attach a completed electronic version of the Student Assessment Form ("Form A"), which you have downloaded from the website at http://www.education.ex.ac.uk/students/bart (see instructions above). Please note that your work cannot be marked until we have received the completed Form A to accompany it.
(b) Post
Please remember that unless you are submitting a creative writing portfolio you should not bind your work with a comb, slide binder or treasury tags or place it in any sort of folder. Please use staples to secure your pages.
Do not forget to enclose a printed Student Assessment Form ("Form A") with your assessment. Please do not post your formal assignment directly to your tutor. Please send it together with your completed Student Assessment Form to:
Department of Lifelong LearningUniversity of Exeter
St. Luke’s Campus
Heavitree Road
Exeter
Devon
EX1 2LU
In the past some work has not reached us or has arrived very late where there have been insufficient stamps on the envelope. It is therefore worth checking with the Post Office for the correct postage (these now relate to size and weight of item).
(c) By Hand
Please remember that unless you are submitting a creative writing portfolio you should not bind your work with a comb, slide binder or treasury tags or place it in any sort of folder. Please use staples to secure your pages.
Do not forget to enlose a completed Student Assessment Form ("Form A") with your assessment.
If you decide to deliver your essay in person you can bring it to Student Information Office:
- Room NC18 (in the archway near the porter's lodge)
- Open on weekdays from 8:45 a.m. until 4:45 p.m.
If the office is closed you can hand your work in at the porter’s lodge, but in this instance it is very important that your envelope is clearly marked for the attention of the Department of Lifelong Learning. The porter’s lodge is usually open 24 hours a day, but if it is closed you can put your work through their letterbox (again, ensuring it is clearly marked).
