Free play with instruments
Babies and adults enjoyed sensing the movement and the swishing sounds of the ocean drum as it was moved from side to side and up and down. These drums come in different sizes. Sometimes they are filled with seeds. For children under two, the variety of interesting noises that emerge through tilting, tipping, dropping and jolting the sides as well as beating or tapping the surface are intriguing and potentially creative. The video shows a 19 month old exploring and concentrating on the different sounds he can make by manipulating the ocean drum and watching what is going on inside it too.
