Listening to music
Listening to CDs with a baby can be enhanced by the gentle movement of soft fabrics such as voile or organza while the music is played. Where the fabric is transparent and light, the parent’s face can still be seen through the material, which is reassuring for the baby. At first it can be disturbing to be lying on one’s back having fabric rising and falling above one’s face. But with reassurance through a familiar song or a piece of music, it becomes both exciting and relaxing. We laid the babies down next to each other, put on a CD of Saint Saens ‘Aquarium’ from Carnival of Animals and watched their responses.
