Experience whilst Studying
Please note the School of Education and Lifelong Learning will not be recruiting any more undergraduate students from 2009. For more information please see the main Undergraduate home page
We have a number of programs in place to help improve your employability prospects as you study, including:
- Creative Media and IT: a chance to improve your ICT skills
- Playing for Success: working as a mentor helping children with sports activities
- Student Associate Scheme: gaining experience in what it means to be a teacher
Creative Media and IT
Creative Media and IT (CMIT) degree-level modules are available for any student at the university in any year of study, provided your School allows it within the requirements of your degree programme. In general, students can take up to 30 credits of CMIT modules in any one year, under the university's system of Enhanced Modularity.
Any time spent using the CMIT facilities will benefit your career prospects; taking a degree level Information Technology module will put you in a particularly strong position.
Previous graduates who have made an Information Technology module part of their degree have, because of the computing, been able to find employment in graphic design, management consultancy, programming and publishing both here and abroad. Some have also gone on to postgraduate courses in publishing and graphic design.
Playing for Success
Playing for Success (PfS) is a partnership between the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF), local authorities and a broad range of sports. At Exeter it is run at the Grecian Centre, a joint venture between Devon County Council and Exeter City Football Club.
As a purpose built ICT rich environment exploiting cutting edge technology and the unique environment of St James’ Park, The Grecian Centre aims to add something extra to the learning of the young people in Devon, working with school children of 10 to 14 years of age, drawn from schools in and around Exeter.
Children attend for six weeks, and the curriculum provides them with scope to undertake exciting activities using Apple Mac technology as the main tool for learning. By the end of the course they will see themselves as effective learners and have celebrated their achievements by sharing what they have learnt with others.
- Read what one of our Education Studies students, Rachel Smith, has to say about the being part of 'Playing for Success'
You can volunteer to work as a Voluntary Mentor at The Grecian Centre. In this role, you will be requested to concentrate your time with one or two of the learners attending study support. As you develop experience, you can progress through the various levels of the Learning Support Team: Study Support Assistant; Senior Study Support Assistant; Centre Tutor and so forth. This includes the possibility of undertaking ongoing paid part-time work.
