A new future for the Graduate School of Education:
no further recruitment to our undergraduate programmes

In light of the changing Higher Education environment, we have been considering how to position the Graduate School of Education so that we can build on our research strengths. As a result, we have taken the decision to become a Graduate School and will not be recruiting any more undergraduate students.

We will not be accepting new students to any of our Single Honours or Combined Honours programmes in 2009, and Education Studies and Childhood and Youth Studies will no longer be available through the Flexible Combined Honours scheme.

In the immediate future, we will continue to provide high quality teaching and support to our undergraduates. In the longer term, the School will be focusing on extending its research and expanding its postgraduate taught programmes (including PGCE) and research degrees.

Will our degrees still have the same value to employers as the degree course has been closed?

The undergraduate courses in SELL have a high currency nationally and are greatly valued within their respective fields. We cannot make guarantees about how employers will receive the news about the closure of the undergraduate programmes. Nevertheless, the reputation of education, childhood and youth studies at Exeter is sure to continue for many years to come.

Is this part of the plan to close the St Luke’s Campus?

The closure of the undergraduate programmes is definitely not part of a plan to close the St Luke's Campus. While the 250 or so undergraduates in SELL will gradually move on, there will still be approximately 500 postgraduate students as well as roughly 600 PGCE students within the Graduate School of Education and therefore on the St Luke’s Campus.

Will any future taught masters programmes be aimed at CAYS students?

We do not intend to develop a new Masters programme aimed at Childhood and Youth Studies students. However, some topics of interest to CaYS students could be covered as part of an MSc in Educational Research Methods or as part of MPhil or Doctoral programmes. Education is a broad concept which can encompass a range of subject areas connected with the maturation, development and nurture of children and young people. There might be a way of studying what you are interested in, but within an ‘educational’ framework.
