Equal opportunities
We are committed to a policy of equal opportunity for our students and staff.
As such, we aim to provide a working and learning environment which is free from unfair discrimination, and which will enable everyone in the School to fulfill their personal potential.
Supporting black and minority ethnic student teachers
Whilst it is our experience at Exeter that the majority of black and minority ethnic student teachers thrive here, some have thrived despite racist incidents or attitudes. We think it is right that we provide additional support to 'level the playing field' where necessary, and to this end we run a Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) Student Teachers Support Project.
About the project
Ruth Flanagan, our Race Equality Resource Officer, is available to work closely with students from ethnic minorities, and with partner schools who have BME trainees on placement to ensure that the school placements are successful and positive for all concerned.
Ruth is not part of the student assessment process, and she offers:
- a safe, confidential and non-judgmental place to discuss issues and concerns
- practical support to manage issues such as housing and finance
- referral to appropriate agencies for specialist advice, information and support
