This is a practice-based module requiring critical reflection on your professional role. In order to be successful, you will need to be currently or recently engaged in, or actively pursuing teaching or activities which support learning within a UK research-intensive HE context, so that you can consider your practice through student, peer- and self-evaluation.

Attending LTHE is mandatory for postgraduates who teach, assess and/or support students’ learning at the University of Exeter. It is also available to professional services and academic colleagues on E&S Associate Lecturer or research-only contracts, who have a responsibility for teaching and/or supporting learning. The LTHE assessment is optional and can lead to Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) as well as a Certificate in Advanced Studies: Learning and Teaching in Higher Education at NQF level 7 (30 credits).

This descriptor details the NQF level 7 pathway for LTHE.

This module will be of interest if you aspire to a career in a Higher Education institution which involves teaching or supporting learning. It will enable you to gain credits towards an internationally recognised Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice or an equivalent mandatory postgraduate qualification. You can transfer that credit through accreditation of prior learning to any Higher Education institution in the UK (depending on existing policies and procedures at the institution to which you wish to make that transfer). The programme supports the professionalisation of the Higher Education teaching community in the context of the University’s ASPIRE (Accrediting Staff Professionalism in Research-led Education) framework for continuing professional development. In undertaking this module, you will be joining a community of practitioners who seek to improve their professional practice in the Higher Education context. The ILOs and content of this module align explicitly with the HEA UK Profession Standards Framework (PSF).

The Module will provide you with an interdisciplinary learning environment, which will allow you to explore a variety of approaches, and to compare and contrast these in dialogue with your peers. Structured learning activities will be varied, to include interactive lectures, discussion groups, collaborative small group tasks, and online activities and discussion forums.

The module will comprise a 1-day Stage 1, and a Stage 2 of 4x 3-hour sessions (the second 1.5 hours of the fourth session is optional for those participants wishing to do the assessment). Stage 1 is one of the prerequisites for Stage 2, although the requirement to attend Stage 1 may be waived in the event that a candidate already has substantial teaching experience and/or qualification. An additional 2-hour group tutorial preparing for the assessment will follow. The module will thus last cumulatively 6 weeks. You will be supported by the LTHE team, and will also be invited to attend a 2 hour group tutorial if you choose to submit the assessment.

*While the teaching is delivered over 6 weeks, you may take up to 28 months from completing the module to complete the final assessment. This should give you sufficient time to develop and reflect upon your own teaching-related practices.
