Jean Lang
Postgraduate Researcher
School of Education
About me:
Following a 43-year career as a teacher, headteacher and system leader, I formally retired in August 2017 to concentrate on educational research. I enrolled as a part time distance student on the Educational Research MSc at Exeter in 2018 and completed this degree successfully in 2020, gaining a distinction and the Dean’s Commendation for Exceptional Performance. My Dissertation focussed on features needed to develop and sustain Lesson Study, a form of professional development and learning which I have promoted nationally and internationally for the past decade. In January 2021 I registered for a MPhil, upgrading to a PhD in October 2021 as a distance learner. I hope to successfully complete my doctoral studies in January 2024.
Alongside my academic studies, I am Vice Chair of Governors of a collaborative group of four small schools in North Yorkshire and have been a member of the Council of the World Association of Lesson Studies (WALS) since 2012, becoming Honorary General Secretary from 2017 to 2021 and currently continuing as a member of the Executive Council. My WALS duties have included being a member of the central organisation team for annual conferences and leading on aspects of communication.
