Roles: In addition to teaching and research, Hayhoe also holds a number of managerial roles, including:
- Coordinator of Professional Education for the Faculty of Humanities and Social Science
- Member of the university's Impact Community of Practice (ICoP), for which he is currently chair
- Director of Studies, MA Special Educational Needs
- Co-Lead, Centre for Well-Being, Inclusion and Disability in Educational Research (C-WIDER)
Hayhoe is also an Associate of the Scottish Sensory Centre, University of Edinburgh.
Research: Hayhoe's research focuses on disability (primarily: sensory impairment, secondarily: neurodiversity), ageing, accessible and inclusive technologies, and social science research methodology. His most significant project investigated the use of mobile technologies as tools of inclusion for adults with disabilities, which was sponsored by a Horizon 2020 grant from the European Union (2016-2020). The project was led by VRVis (based in Vienna) and its partners included the University of Bath, the Open University, national museums in London, Madrid and Vienna and technology companies in Vienna and Belgrade. This and related research was featured in a UKRI REF 2021 Impact Case Study, for which Hayhoe was the lead. Hayhoe has also conducted research projects in the US, Canada, United Arab Emirates, Mexico, Italy, Spain, Austria, the Republic of Ireland and the UK.
Editorial: Hayhoe is co-editor of the Routledge book series, Qualitative and Visual Methodologies in Educational Research, he is an associate editor of Discover Global Issues and he is on the editorial boards of the British Journal of Visual Impairment and Social Inclusion.
Recognition: Hayhoe has won numerous awards and fellowships, including a Fulbright All Disciplines Scholar's Award and fellowships of the British Computer Society and Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, USA). He has also been an associate of the Centre for the Philosophy of Natural and Social Science at the London School of Economics and the Scottish Sensory Centre, University of Edinburgh, and an advisor to the World Health Organisation, the Latvian and Israeli research councils, the Guardian / Scott Trust Legacies of Slavery Project and the Lithuanian Government's Centre for Quality Assessment in Higher Education amongst others.
Knowledge Exchange: Hayhoe has delivered keynotes and guest lectures for the Royal National Institute of the Blind, MAXXI (Rome), the Wellcome Collection (London), the Sidur Museum (Moscow), Tate Modern, Manege Central Exhibition Hall (St Petersburg), the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), the Institute of Child Health at Great Ormond Street Hospital, Central Saint Martin's School of Art (London), University College London, Central European University (Vienna), KU Leuven, Toronto University, Harvard University, the London School of Economics, MIT, University of California Berkeley, Vrije Universiteit (Brussels) and the Government of the Province of Milan amongst others. He has also been an invited speaker at conferences at the University of Cambridge, the Royal National Institute of the Blind and the University of Oxford.
More recently, Hayhoe co-developed the Cornish Cultural Heritage Access Network, that last meeting of which was at Tate St Ives in Cornwall, this project is ongoing.
