Overview
I am the postdoctoral Impact Fellow for Humanities, Arts, and Social Science. I work at the interesection between academia and professional services to understand, map, and promote interdiscplinary research and research with non-academic stakeholders across HASS. I am specifically interested in identifying how the drivers and barriers for knowledge exchange alter at different career stages. The research feeds back into the university to inform strategic decisions about the successful drivers for knowledge exchange, and how the university can promote this. This project itself is a reflexive opportunity to consider how the institutional power of the university can both help and hinder knowledge exchange and stakeholder engagement.
I was previously a postdoctoral researcher for the Theology and Religion department at Exeter (2019 - 2022) and contributed to an international project called God and the Book of Nature. My research expanded on themes from my PhD exploring the historical and philosophical contexts of the development of scientific method. I have particular interest on Kant's influence on the development of biology in Britian, and write about this my forthcoming book How Kant Matters for Biology (University of Wales Press, 2023). I am also edting a Special Issue on Kant and Natural Science with Dr Andrew Cooper (Kantian Review, 2023).
I am involved in ongoing collaboarative research exploring the impact of fungicides on local water bodies in the South-West (https://fungicidefarmingsouthwest.wordpress.com/). I have also been working with colleages at the physics department at University of Bristol to explore knoweldge exchange opportunites and the specific need for an Ethics of Nuclear Innovation. As part of this I have co-created and taught a module for Masters Students at the Southwest Nuclear Hub and postgraduate workshops physics students from eight universities in collaboration with the Nuclear Energies Futures Centre for Doctoral Training.

Abstract:
Principlism in medicine – a philosopher's view
This article critically examines appeals to common morality within Beauchamp and Childress's Principles of Biomedical Ethics. I examine how this aspect of their account relates to Kant's account of morality. I consider criticisms against principlism on the basis that medical ethics cannot be grounded on a common morality because of the responsibilities and duties specific to medical practice. I suggest these arguments do not deny the possibility of universal moral principles; rather they demonstrate how the actions and duties that best instantiate these principles are context-specific and can differ between organizations.
