Overview

Before joining the Graduate School of Education in 2018, I spent 20 years working as a secondary English teacher (KS3-5) in schools across the South West, both in mainstream and alternative provisions.  During this time, I taught English language, Literature, and Media Studies.  In my current role, as a Lecturer of Education, I work primarily on the secondary English PGCE programme, as well as the MA Education Online.

My research interests centre on the writing process, the teaching and learning of grammar through contextualised approaches, as well as the relationship between procedural and declarative metalinguistic knowledge.  I am also interested in exploring links between:

  • Literacy attainment, social disadvantage, and gender
  • Students' academic writing in HE
  • Teachers' use of digital technology and resources, particularly in the English classroom context
