About us
We have over 165 years of experience in education. Our history can be traced all the way back to 1839, with the initial establishment of the Exeter Diocesan Training School (developed to prepare students to become teachers of the poor in Church of England schools). In 1854 the School moved to new purpose-built premises on the Heavitree Road, which we know now as the St Luke’s campus. In 1978 the original teacher training school became the School of Education, within the University of Exeter.
Today the School of Education can still be found on the beautiful and historic St Luke’s campus. Students enjoy spending time on the green lawns in the quadrangle space at the centre of the campus, as well as in the large Education library and the communal Crosskeys café and study space.
We are a research-led department. Our educational research advances policy, theory and practice and contributes to the broader vision of Education, nationally and internationally. Our research community is designed to support outstanding educational practice through bringing together teachers, researchers in education, and experts and practitioners from other fields to develop innovative and rigorous approaches to teaching and learning.
We offer students a wide range of postgraduate and teacher education programmes, both on campus and online. Students on these programmes learn from academics who are experts in their field and passionate about sharing the latest research. They also join a vibrant, supportive and friendly international student community which brings a collective wealth of different educational and cultural experiences and perspectives.
